INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN HAIR PRODUCTS

- THE DAYS OF GRABBING ANYTHING OFF THE SHELF IS GONE. IF YOU WANT TO SEE RESULTS WITH YOUR HAIR YOU HAVE TO INVEST IN THE RIGHT PRODUCTS. LET'S CHAT ABOUT THE TOP INGREDIENTS TO AVOID IN YOUR HAIR PRODUCTS.

You reach for your shampoo, conditioners, and hair styling products every day, but how well do you know the products you are putting in your hair? Take a look at the labels, chances are, we all have a collection of hair products that are loaded with toxic chemicals that can give hair an instant refresh. Most products help give us squeaky-clean bouncy, smooth, and lustrous locks and we settle for that but do you know that these products are full of synthetically derived substances that are harmful to us and the environment.

Many people are unaware of what ingredients they should be avoiding. Below we have listed five harmful ingredients that shouldn’t be going in your hair.

SULFATE

This ingredient can be found in 90 percent of cleaning products such as laundry detergents, floor cleaners, and dishwashers to your personal care products. Sulfate should not be going in your hair because it not only removes excess sweat and sebum but also strips down proteins and natural oils from your strands that keep your hair hydrated. Over time, your hair will weaken, and become very prone to frizz, damage, breakage, and split ends.

PARABENS

Parabens are preservatives used to increase the shelf life of cosmetics and shampoos. They are used to prevent bacteria from growing in cosmetic formulations. Parabens are known to mimic the hormone estrogen and disturb your natural hormone balance. They can easily be absorbed by the human body when applied to the scalp which puts your hair and your body at risk.

MINERAL OIL

Mineral oil has smoothing properties which is why it is used in different cosmetic formulations. When it comes to hair treatments, mineral oil can detangle hair, restore shine, and prevent split ends. But mineral oil can’t penetrate the hair fiber therefore it keeps sitting on the surface of the skin which can lead to build-up on the scalp making the strands look dull and lifeless.

PHTHALATES

Phthalates are used in cosmetic formulations to increase the spread ability of products such as fragrances, lubricators, and conditioners and make added artificial scents of the products wear longer throughout the day. They can be harmful to human health as they can cause problems in the reproduction system. Any item in hair care products simply listed as “fragrance” usually contains phthalates.

POLYETHYLENE GLYCOLS (PEG)

PEG is a derivative of petroleum jelly that is often polluted with byproducts that are used as a thickening agent in hair care products. It can strip the hair of its natural oils leaving your scalp with a damaging effect.
